W&D (Windows & Doors) is a small project born, as a lot of projects were, during the Corona 19 pandemic. Back in March of 2020, a lot of people were unsure of the pandemic’s severity, and a lot of people locked down and spent most of the time sealed away from the (unwashed) masses. As a college student, living in off-campus housing with a handful of close friends (Dinkytown, Minneapolis), staying in and waiting it out was not that bad of a deal. We were especially glad to hear that classes were to be online for the remainder of the semester. We passed the time watching movies, playing video games, and Zooming friends that weren’t “in our circle”. And these pastimes helped get us through this very weird time in our lives. That said, daily walks in the neighborhood were by far the thing that kept us the most sane through it all. Walks allowed people to get out of the house and away from one another. It was a short respite from an otherwise repetitive and stale environment. These little walks became fascinating to me. The fact that simply leaving a space, for a bit, can change so much in a person’s immediate experience was a crucial revelation for continued cohabitation. And with these walks, and thoughts of people being shut up in their individual spaces, I began noticing all of the different ways these spaces connect to the outside world. Connections, most commonly windows & doors, seem like pretty straightforward, or boring, subjects considering all of the other subjects great photo projects have been made about. However, while thinking about all of the different things that lie behind each door, each window, and how each portal functions, allowing people to interact with their own world, it is a subject I am glad sparked my interest nonetheless.

“Windows & Doors is an amazing conversation starter at the center of my coffee table.
It's a rare time capsule of a period when they were all closed (and always fun to flip through). ”
